Although her artistic practice also includes drawings and installations, Leen Voet is first and foremost a painter. Her pictorial style is characterised by vibrant colours and geometric shapes. Leen Voet works in series and has a conceptual approach. She is inspired by found visual and literary sources and questions, in a manner that is not devoid of humour, the very notion of creativity and the value of artistic expression in our society.
Titled ALDA & ARMAND, the series of large-format oil paintings is based on four tea towels decorated with screen-printed flowers that the artist’s family received at a local food market in the 70s and 80s. Decades later, her father gave her the memory-laden tea towels on the express condition that she “make paintings out of them”. Leen Voet took up the challenge. She translated and enlarged their designs on canvas. The ALDA & ARMAND series includes exact reproductions and geometric rendrings that document the tea towels’ psychological and intimate dimension. To quote Louise Osieka, curator of the CIAP Kunstverein in Hasselt, where part of the series was presented for the first time, “In line with Leen Voet’s previous work, this series is a reflection on the process of receiving, accepting and appropriating an assignment, on the rules of art and artistry, and the process of formally reinterpreting certain patterns.”
Leen Voet was born in Belgium in 1971.She lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. She has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the CIAP Kunstverein, Hasselt, Belgium (2019), Kunstbunker Forum für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Nuremberg, Germany (2016), Trampoline Gallery, Antwerp (2016 and 2014).She has taken part in exhibitions in institutions like the M HKA in Antwerp, Belgium (2019), the Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, Belgium (2019), La Loge in Brussels, Belgium (2018), De Markten in Brussels, Belgium (2017), Dr. Guislain Museum, Ghent (2016) et WIELS in Brussels (2015), to mention but a few. In 2001, Leen Voet completed a residency at the Villa Arson in Nice, France. She has received many prizes, such as the Prix Fernand Baudin (2012) and the Prix Langui for Young Painters (2003).
